Break Into Two
Finally hitting the stride with Reason. Now, new and improved with things like melody and lead instruments. After dicking around with everything the toolkits had to offer, finally discovered the joy of the mighty piano. Duh. Most assuredly the proggiest offering yet. Sort of an arrangement for a band, but I’m not sure who plays what. The guitarist surely does double duty on keys from time to time. I guess one of the joys of this sort of composition is not having to worry about having enough hands to play what instruments. I’m particularly happy with this one.
For a change picked an acoustic drum kit that was not so John Bonham In Your Face style – supposedly an Al Green style more laid back funk kit. Bass is a fretless model with a light fuzz stomp when needed. The acoustic guitars pissed me off since I could not figure out how to make them not sound like harpsichords. We’ll work on that. Keys sport Hammond organ (of course), plain ol’ piano and a Moog for the portamento-riffic leads. About ditched the Moog but the boy suggested otherwise. Not sure of the vintage of the lead electric guitar. Let’s just call is a Les Paul and call it a day, ok?
This was fun to work on but I ended up mix-obsessing more than I would have cared to. The Reason finalizers are new to me and I liked this one so much that I wanted to groom it a bit. The whole “joyous and seamless interaction of Reason and Logic via ReWire” is somewhat overblown, so I had to get a little more snuggly with the Reason mastering stuff.
So here we go:
And the Reason published song:
The reason song uses the Reason Drum Kits (from Propellerheads) and Triple Bass/Guitars (from Sonic Reality) ReFills. Also used a pad from the eXode Wave Soundscapes 2 ReFill, but that’s free and you don’t need to listen to the song. But it’s a nice set of pads and scapes so grab it. After applying my new mastering patch and having to dink with the Moog afterwards, it’s sort of a CPU buster right in the middle.
